In this BLOGoZON we take a look at the C major scale (ionian mode) (1 2 3 5 6 7 - C D E F G A B) and join them all together for 5-string bass (Drop D + High C - DADGC) to form one long CAGFD octaves chain.
The CAGFD octaves sequence is shown for C natural in the diagram that follows.
The diagram that follows shows all five of the CAGFD octaves shapes for use with the
box shapes for a 5-string bass (Drop D + High C - DADGC).

As always a more long term solution to fretboard navigation is to see scales as INTERVAL shapes
rather than note names - as these are universal to all scales, arpeggios and chords rather than
specific to one particular root note - with this in mind the intervals for the
C major scale (ionian mode) (1 2 3 5 6 7 - C D E F G A B)
are detailed below in the CAGFD octaves manner.

Once the individual box shapes have been assimilated all five shapes should be linked together and played in one continuous exercise (with the first shape - 4C1 - being repeated at the 12th fret). The first box shape located at the nut (4C1 shown above) is incomplete; the B natural note on string 1 would be located at imaginary fret -1, which is obviously unplayable. However this note can be played on string 2 (as shown in the video that follows) but this breaks out of the strict movable CAGED octaves pattern sequence.
